iPads and Galaxy tablets popular online

Bidorbuy, South Africa’s largest online commerce platform, said that tablet PCs such as the iPad and Galaxy Tab are showing strong growth and are overtaking desktop computer and laptop sales.

Bidorbuy CEO Jaco Jonker told MyBroadband that traditionally, the most popular categories on Bidorbuy are collectibles like coins, and products of mass consumption such as electronics and computers.

In the electronics and computing segment of the market, Jonker said, the Apple brand is the most sought-after, especially their iPhones and iPads.

“Generally speaking, tablets like iPad or Galaxy are going from strength to strength, overtaking desktop computers and even laptops,” said Jonker.

According to Jonker the growing Internet population in South Africa bodes well for eCommerce in the country.  However, the biggest driving force behind e-commerce remains pricing, said Jonker.

Increased competition and better service levels are further boosting online buying and selling in South Africa.

“We are seeing many new online players entering the market. There are international investments into online businesses and increased marketing around online businesses. All this raises the visibility of e-commerce and attracts more consumers online which grows the entire online economy,” said Jonker.
