WASPA in “legal discussions” with Buongiorno
The Wireless Application Service Providers’ Association (WASPA) is currently engaged in legal discussions with multinational “mobile content developer” Buongionro over contraventions of the WASPA code of conduct.
Last week (24 July 2012), MoneyWeb tackled Buongiorno’s South African MD, Hans Mol, over reports on consumer website Hellopeter which alleged that Buongiorno deducted money from their accounts without permission.
Aside from the Hellopeter complaints, Buongiorno and its predecessor, iTouch, have a poor track record with WASPA, itself.
Since its inception in 2004, WASPA has fined errant members a total of R17.8-million. Buongiorno (SA and UK) and iTouch’s fines amount to R2.9-million; 16% of the issued total, and more than any other WASPA member.
However, despite the complaints against the company, Buongiorno’s adverts remain active, and the site is still a member of WASPA. When queried about Buongiorno’s membership status, WASPA was not keen to go into any detail regarding the matter, as they were actively involved in legal discussions with the company.
“WASPA consistently applies sanctions to WASPA members found in contravention of the WASPA Code of Conduct and have removed WASPs that have been found to be in contravention of serious offenses in the Code.”
“Currently, WASPA has some sanctions that are the subject of legal discussions with Buongiorno – all other Buongiorno fines have been paid as per the applicable sanctions,” WASPA said.
WASPA’s representative told MyBroadband BusinessTech that more information would be available “later”, but would not commit to a timeframe.
