Most affordable 100Mbps Internet connections in South Africa — prices from R399

South African residents can get an Internet connection with speeds of 100Mbps or higher for as little as R399 per month, provided they are willing to adhere to a fair usage policy (FUP).
Mobile network operators implement FUPs for fixed-LTE and fixed-5G packages to protect the integrity of their networks and reduce congestion through their towers.
High data consumption through a single tower can result in degraded speeds and performance for users in the area.
MyBroadband looked for the most affordable 100Mbps or higher Internet connections available to South African residents, regardless of technology.
Regarding FUPs, mobile operator Rain’s uncapped fixed-5G packages are the only ones offering service conditions similar to those of fibre. However, it isn’t included in this comparison as its 100Mbps was too expensive to make the cut.
The most affordable 100Mbps or higher Internet connection available in the country is Supersonic’s MTN 5G Lite Uncapped package, providing speeds of up to 200Mbps for R399 per month.
It should be noted that this price excludes a router, for which Supersonic charges R1,999. Alternatively, customers can opt for the same package, including a router, for R699 per month.
The package offers speeds up to 200Mbps until a 400GB threshold is reached, after which speeds are throttled to 10Mbps.
Axxess’s MTN Standard 5G package is the next-most affordable in the country at R449. The fixed-5G connection claims to offer speeds up to 500Mbps.
However, Afrihost also offers MTN fixed-5G packages and notes that the network averages speeds of 246Mbps.
The Axxess MTN Standard 5G package offers best-effort speeds until a 300GB threshold is reached. Thereafter, speeds are throttled to 2Mbps.
Axxess’s Vodacom Standard 5G package is the third-most affordable connection available, offering speeds up to 500Mbps for R495 per month.
It has a lower FUP threshold than the similar package on MTN’s network. Once a 250GB threshold is reached, speeds are throttled to 2Mbps.
For those who don’t want to worry about hitting FUP thresholds, the most affordable 100Mbps or higher fibre connection available is Frogfoot’s asymmetrical 120Mbps package through Webafrica, which costs R699 per month.
The Internet service provider (ISP) also sells Frogfoot’s symmetrical 120Mbps package for R754 per month.
Another notable option is Mitsol’s asymmetrical 120Mbps package, also through Webafrica, for R729 per month.
The table below lists the 25 most affordable 100Mbps or higher Internet connections available to South African residents. These include fibre, fixed-5G, and fixed-LTE connections.
