SA police in Facebook spat

A man from Gordon’s Bay intends suing a police officer after she allegedly posted a photograph of his stepson on Facebook and accused him of theft, it was reported on Monday.

The Star reported that Philip Brink, 53, plans to sue the high-ranking policewoman for R500,000 for defamation and emotional trauma arising from the social media post.

After the police officer’s son’s cellphone was stolen on April 4, the woman reportedly posted the message on Facebook in Afrikaans.

“Tonight my son and his friends were robbed of their cellphones by two pigs, and the pigs still brag they are going to stab them to death as they stabbed to death another child at the shop…,” the post read.

“They assaulted the children and poured alcohol down their throats.”

Brink’s stepson, Kyle Yon, 20, handed himself in to the police. He remained in custody. His alleged accomplice remained at large.

Brink said: “[The policewoman] went online and posted pictures of them without knowing if they were guilty or not.

“She also accused them of being involved in the stabbing of another young man who my 13-year-old daughter and her friends knew.”

Brink said his wife had been unable to sleep since the incident and was embarrassed because her colleagues knew about it.

According to The Star, he had reported the policewoman to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate.
