Twitter, Facebook fury over lion hunt

Describing herself as an avid hunter her entire life who has turned her passion into a career as a TV producer, host, and writer, Melissa Bachman was on the receiving end of the fury of the Internet after posing with the carcass of a lion.

“Incredible day in South Africa! Stalked inside 60-yards on this beautiful male lion… what a hunt!” the update on her official Twitter account said, providing a link to a photograph of the hunter with the slain lion.

Based on earlier tweets, Bachman had been hunting and posing for photos with a number of animals in South Africa, including buck and the lion that sparked the backlash.

A flurry of negative reactions to the photo of the dead lion led to the creation of an online petition which asks the South African government to deny Bachman future entry into the country.

Sunday Times reported that Bachman deactivated her Twitter and Facebook accounts “within hours” of the start of the backlash. She could also not be contacted for comment, the newspaper said.
