IPv6 adoption and traffic
Akamai’s latest State of the Internet Report shows that IPv6 is enjoying strong growth, especially in European countries.
The report uses data leveraged directly from the Akamai Intelligent platform to provide insights into IPv6 adoption across numerous vectors.
According to the report European countries have taken a clear lead in IPv6 adoption, with seven of the top 10 countries. Conversely, only one country in Asia Pacific (Japan) is among the top 10.
“We expect that over time, IPv6 traffic percentages will generally increase,” Akamai said. “Early indications are positive, as traffic percentages in both the United States and Germany had increased to over 6% by mid-December.”

Over the course of the third quarter of 2013, IPv6 traffic levels on the Akamai Intelligent Platform grew from just over 176,000 hits/second to more than 277,000 hits/second.
IPv6 traffic continued to exhibit a cyclical weekly pattern, with volumes dipping each Saturday, likely indicating a greater level of IPv6 adoption across corporate/enterprise networks than consumer ISPs.

South African IPv6 adoption
While the Akamai State of the Internet Report did not provide statistics for South Africa, Google publishes regularly updated IPv6 statistics.
The per-country IPv6 adoption data published by Google does not align exactly with Akamai’s figures, but the measurements are relatively similar
The latest Google figures show that South Africa’s IPv6 adoption rate is 0.14% – significantly lower than leaders like the United States (5.8%) and Germany (6.26%).
