WhatsApp, Telegram down
Instant messaging services WhatsApp and Telegram went offline on Saturday evening (22 February 2014), the companies have confirmed through posts on Twitter.
According to an update from WhatsApp on its Twitter page, it is currently experiencing server issues.
The outage follows a recent announcement from Facebook that it plans to acquire WhatsApp for $19 billion (US) in cash, shares, and restricted stock.
A rival service, Telegram, has reported a surge in new user registrations since Facebook’s announcement.
Telegram has said that this “avalanche” of new users have resulted in the SMS gateways Telegram uses for registration to become overloaded, and is causing connection issues in Europe.
Update (23 February 2014, 00h48): WhatsApp reported that its services have been restored. The instant messaging service was contacted for comment, but a spokesperson did not immediately respond to e-mail.
