Sasfin announces winners of 2023 Cristal Challenge stock-picking tournament
Keletso Modise, Veenesh Dhayalam, and David Shapiro were the best stock pickers in the 2023 Sasfin Cristal Challenge.
Sasfin Wealth’s chief global equity strategist, David Shapiro, started the Cristal challenge in January 2021.
Named after the famous premium champagne, the challenge is a fun and exciting opportunity to encourage outside participation within the stock market.
Shapiro initially started with ten players and has grown the annual contest to 200 participants in the 2023 challenge.
Each participant picks five stocks, and their performance is tracked over the year. The winners are selected based on the return of their 5-stock portfolio by 1 December.
At the end of the period, whoever has made the most money is awarded a bottle of Cristal and other prizes.
Many well-known media personalities, fund managers, analysts, and investors entered the 2023 Cristal Challenge.
Participants included big names like Keith McLachlan, Bright Khumalo, Mia Kruger, Marc Hasenfuss, Piet Viljoen, Giulietta Talevi, Nick Kunze, and — of course — David Shapiro.
The winner of the Cristal Challenge 2023 was Keletso Modise, who picked Shoprite, Investec, Bidvest, Gold Fields, and Absa.
Veenesh Dhayalam finished second with his selection of Hammerson, PPC, Fortress B, EPE, and Master Drilling.
David Shapiro finished third with his five picks – Bytes, Reunert, Growthpoint, Kumba, and Pepkor.
The top three places were separated by less than one percentage point, showing how close the competition was.
