Twitter disabling API features crippling third-party apps

Twitter will soon remove several features from its application programming interface, impacting third-party Twitter apps such as Tweetbot and Twitterific.

Tweetbot recently released an update for its iOS app which disabled the features that Twitter is removing before the API changes cause them to break.

“On August 16th, Twitter will disable parts of their public interface that we use in Tweetbot,” said developer Tapbots.

“Because Twitter has chosen not to provide alternatives to these interfaces we have been forced to disable or degrade certain features. We are sorry about this, but unfortunately this is totally out of our control.”

The following features are impacted:

  • Timeline streaming on Wi-Fi is disabled. Timelines will refresh automatically every 1-2 minutes.
  • Push notifications for Mentions and Direct Messages will be delayed by a few minutes.
  • Push notifications for Likes, Retweets, Follows, and Quotes have been disabled.
  • Activity and Stats tabs have been removed.
  • The Apple Watch app has been removed.
