Checkers Sixty60 beats PnP Asap

Checkers Sixty60 offers better pricing than Pick n Pay’s on-demand delivery rival, PnP asap!, for various grocery products available through both platforms, a MyBroadband analysis has revealed.

Of the two, Checkers was first to launch its on-demand grocery delivery service, which it did in 2019, just before the Covid-19 pandemic.

Pick n Pay launched asap! in August 2021. It was effectively a relaunch of its revamped Bottles delivery service, which previously focused on alcohol deliveries from Pick n Pay Liquor outlets.

Checkers Sixty60 quickly became the dominant on-demand delivery service, after many believed its success would only last during the Covid-19 lockdowns.

Shoprite’s financial results for the second half of 2024 revealed that Sixty60’s sales grew by 47.1% during the period, following 63.1% sales growth during the year’s first half.

In comparison, Pick n Pay’s latest trading statement revealed that online sales had grown by 42.5% during the 45 weeks ended 5 January 2025. It said this growth was PnP asap! and Groceries on the Mr D app.

Shoprite’s latest results also showed record customer retention and advocacy rates, despite increased competition in the on-demand delivery space.

The average frequency of customers placing orders through the on-demand platform increased by 1.3 times during the reporting period.

Checkers recently launched a website for its Sixty60 service, which was previously only available through the iOS and Android smartphone apps.

This is good news for South Africans with Huawei smartphones, as the Sixty60 app hasn’t been available on the brand’s app store.

Shoprite said this had prevented roughly 2.6 million of the country’s residents from accessing the service.

The website enables shoppers to access the service using a browser on any device that supports one, and existing customers can sign into the website and sync their accounts and shopping baskets across devices.

Users can log in or create a new account using their mobile number.

On-demand grocery price shootout

MyBroadband compared Checkers Sixty60 and PnP asap! pricing for 15 grocery items common to both on-demand delivery services.

The two platforms offered similar pricing for eight of the 15 products, including two-litre bottles of Coca-Cola, six 330ml Castle Lite bottles, Lancewood Plain Double Cream Yoghurt, and one-litre Schweppes Tonic bottles.

They also matched for products like a 900g bag of Nature’s Garden Frozen Country Mix, Dr. Oetker Frozen Ital Pizza, 2kg Omo Auto washing powder, and an 18-pack of Baby Soft 2-Ply toilet paper.

Checkers Sixty60 was cheaper for five of the products compared, including a 700g loaf of Sasko Premium white bread, a one-litre Clover Super M Chocolate Flavoured Milkshake, and a 200g pack of Eskort Back Bacon.

While it was R1 or R2 cheaper than PnP asap! for most of these products, its prices for identical packs of Eskort Bacon and Eskort Red Viennas were both R5 less than PnP’s pricing.

However, the most significant price difference was between Checkers Sixty60’s price of R74.99 price for a 1kg tub of Thokoman Smooth Peanut Butter and PnP’s price of R89.99.

However, it should be noted that Checkers Sixty60 is running a promotion on the peanut butter tubs until 8 June 2025. Its usual pricing is the same as PnP asap!

PnP asap! was cheaper for a two-litre Clover Full Cream Fresh Milk bottle and a 750g jar of Crosse and Blackwell Tangy Mayonnaise.

It should be noted that PnP asap!’s price of R31.99 for the two-litre Clover Milk is promotional, and the standard pricing is R35.99 — still R1 less than Checkers’ pricing.

However, it is unclear when the promotion ends.
