Checkers making a killing with Sixty60
Checkers-owner Shoprite Holdings has released an operational update for the six months ended 28 December 2025, revealing strong year-on-year growth in on-demand e-commerce sales.
Shoprite recorded 34.6% year-over-year sales growth through the Sixty60 platform during the period, contributing to the company’s overall 7.1% sales growth in the supermarkets segment in South Africa.
Checkers Sixty60’s sales growth over the six months ended 28 December 2025 was slightly slower year-on-year, following an increase of 47.1% in the same period last year.
Shoprite currently offers on-demand delivery from 694 locations in South Africa, up from 539 stores in 2024.
The company recently shared its plans to further expand its general merchandise selection on Checkers Sixty60 with MyBroadband.
“We will continue to evolve the Checkers Sixty60 service to enhance convenience, increase value, and remove friction from our customers,” Shoprite said.
“Areas of growth include further expanding the general merchandise selection on Sixty60, growing our speciality pet food delivery offering, and increasing our presence in the health and wellness category.”
The service is facing increased competition in South Africa, with Walmart launching its first stores in the country and offering on-demand delivery.
Asked about the entry of potential competitors like Walmart, Shoprite said it welcomes competition in the retail and on-demand delivery spaces as “it ultimately benefits consumers”.
The retailer said value remains critical to its business. It said around 5,000 products were priced lower on Sixty60 in 2025 than they were in 2024.
“Xtra Savings members saved 114% more during our 2025 Early Black Friday promotion compared to the year before,” it added.
However, it stated that, while it was easy to market convenience and low pricing, ensuring consistently accurate, on-time, and fresh deliveries at a national scale is a different story.
“Sixty60’s average first-choice fulfilment rate was 96.8% across 2025, a performance not only sustained but even improved during peak trading periods,” Shoprite said.
The retailer recently expanded its same-day delivery service across new categories, including general merchandise, and it added that customers have responded positively.
The same-day service offers delivery in precise 60-minute time slots, rather than the inconvenient all-day delivery windows typically associated with household items.
