The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is investigating a Tesla Model S Autopilot crash in which the driver was killed.
While in Autopilot mode, the Tesla Model S crashed into a tractor-trailer.
Tesla confirmed the investigation, saying it is the first known fatality in over 130 million miles since Autopilot was activated.
“It is important to emphasize that the NHTSA action is simply a preliminary evaluation to determine whether the system worked according to expectations,” said Tesla.
Tesla said the vehicle was on a divided highway with Autopilot engaged when the tractor-trailer drove across the highway.
Neither Autopilot nor the driver noticed the white side of the tractor-trailer against a brightly-lit sky, so the brake was not applied.
The Model S passed under the trailer, with the bottom of the trailer hitting the windshield area.
