Uber’s city-mapping cars coming to Johannesburg

Uber has introduced mapping cars in Johannesburg to acquire data that will help with the accuracy of the service.

The company introduced the mapping system to Cape Town in November 2016.

The project aims to improve the Uber service by providing drivers with more precise pick-up and drop-off locations, and measuring traffic patterns and route lengths to improve efficiency.

Uber has partnered with selected drivers who accepted the installation of the device. Riders will have the option of cancelling a trip if they do not wish to ride in a car with a mapping device.

The mapping devices do not retain any imagery near pick-up or drop-off locations and riders will be informed if their ride has a mapping device in it.
