Man stabbed to death in Johannesburg after “Uber altercation”

A man was fatally stabbed in the early hours of Sunday morning in Hillbrow after a group of men tried to take his cellphone during an Uber altercation, police said on Monday.

Hillbrow police spokesperson Sergeant Mdu Zondo said that three men were making their way from a nightclub to an Uber, which was parked in the next street due to the ongoing violence between Uber and meter taxi drivers.

When local taxi drivers saw the Uber taxi, they chased the driver away, resulting in the three men exchanging heated words with the taxi drivers.

A 23-year-old man then attempted to take a cellphone from one of the three men, and when he resisted, he was stabbed in the chest. He ran and passed out in a nearby street, where he died.

A security company, Bad Boyz Zone, called for backup and an ambulance after one of their drivers witnessed the attack.

The suspect was chased down and handed over to the police.

Zondo said that the man would be appearing in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday on charges of murder.
