How to get cheaper Gautrain tickets

Commuters in Gauteng can apply online to start benefiting from the Gautrain’s new 50% discounted fares.
The Gauteng Provincial Government announced the launch of the KlevaMova product last week.
Roads and transport MEC Kedibone Diale-Tlabela said the new pricing was part of her government’s plan to make the Gautrain more accessible to a large share of the province’s population.
KlevaMova gives certain customers with lower income or means to earn an income a 50% discount on return trip, weekly, or monthly train products.
The launch comes after Gautrain Management Agency (GMA) chief operating officer Victor Shange told MyBroadband that the service was working on more affordable fares for certain groups.
Shange said that the regular premium fare would always be there but more targeted fare would be introduced for indigent families, pensioners, and learners.
The Gautrain website includes a section explaining the KlevaMova requirements and an online application form for users to submit their details to qualify for the discount.
The website explains that the following people are eligible for the products:
- Members of households with a combined maximum annual income of R350,000 before deductions
- People with a disability earning a maximum of R600,000 per year before deductions
- Pensioners (people over 60 years)
- Scholars (school learners)
While the Gauteng Province’s statement about the launch of KlevaMova mentioned that students under 25 would also qualify for the product, there is no mention of this on the KlevaMova page.
Tertiary institution students already receive a 25% discount on the weekly product 10-trip and monthly 44-trip products.
It should also be noted that the term “scholars” in this case refers to school-going learners under the age of 18.
Although the modern definition of scholar refers to academics, professors, researchers, and other subject matter specialists, the term remains in use for school learners or pupils in South Africa.
Application process and required documents

In the online application form for KlevaMova, users must provide their name, surname, phone number, and ID number, while the work contact number and email address are optional.
To verify this information, the following documentation will also need to be provided for those members of households applying on the basis of earning less than R350,000 per year:
- Copy of ID/birth certificate
- Most recent payslip
- Latest three months’ bank statements
- Home address
- Work address
Alternatively, applicants can submit an official letter from their employer confirming their full name, annual income, home address, and work address.
People with disabilities earning R600,000 a year or less must supply a copy of their ID and an official proof of disability, like a Sassa disability grant card.
Parents who wish to have their kids use the product must provide a copy of their own ID and that of their child. Pensioners only need to provide a copy of their own ID.
Applicants must also specify the eligibility criteria for which they qualify and select the two stations between which they will be travelling.
Gautrain has explained that the discount will only be valid for trips between these two stations. It is also not available on Gautrain buses, mid-buses, or parking fares.
