Google takedown request statistics
Over the last two years, Google has released comprehensive reports bi-annually – detailing the frequency of takedown and data requests received from around the world.
The latest data was released On Tuesday, 25 October, and included the following highlights:
- US law enforcement made 5,950 separate requests for user data from 11,057 user accounts. Google complied with 93 percent of these requests.
- This was an almost 40 percent increase in the number of U.S. requests compared to the same period a year earlier.
- France had 1,300 takedown and data requests, while the United Kingdom had 1,273 requests. These countries were on par with the United States on a per capita basis.
- Brazil and Germany were the leading nations for takedowns, with the former submitting 224 requests to remove 689 items from Google services, and the latter submitting 25 requests to remove 2,405 items.
- Google declined requests from the U.S. to remove videos allegedly depicting police brutality or the defamation of police officers.
- Google restricted Thai users from accessing videos that “allegedly insulted the monarchy in violation of Thailand’s lèse-majesté law.”
