Wikipedia emerged as a relevant and up-to-date news source throughout the 2012 London Olympics.
While Wikipedia has never been a “news” site – instead being considered solely as a digital encyclopaedia – the website managed to keep pace with conventional news media by posting athlete’s official results within minutes.
The site, entirely staffed by volunteers, became increasingly efficient throughout the Games when delivering updates on the events.
“Even though Wikipedia isn’t a news site, I think some readers tend to look at it that way,” said Wikipedia editor, Evan Henry.
“Particularly with it being one of the most popular sites on the Internet, and the Olympics obviously being a huge media event, there is an expectation that the information we have is going to be as up-to-date as possible.”
