Can you pass matric mathematics?

The annual matric pass rate announcement is always a hotly-debated affair, with the Department of Education typically celebrating the results while many detractors warn of declining standards.

One of the biggest concerns for everyone, including the Department of Basic Education, is the low number of matrics who sit the mathematics exam.

There has been a steady decline in the number of full-time matrics who take mathematics – down from 270,598 in 2010 to 231,180 in 2014.

The mathematics pass rate also declined from 59.1% in 2013 to 53.5% in 2014. What is of even more concern is that only 35.1% of learners scored over 40% in mathematics in 2014.

This is despite some academics stating the current matric mathematics exam is much easier than the former higher grade mathematics papers.

While this may be the case, the 2014 matric mathematics papers are still challenging, especially for someone who has been out of school for a while.
