Big step forward for the Hyperloop
Hyperloop Transportation Technologies announced that it has signed agreements with Oerlikon Leybold Vacuum and engineering firm Aecom to assist with construction in the Hyperloop.
Ars Technica reported that Dirk Ahlborn, CEO of Hyperloop Transportation Technologies, said: “It’s a validation of the fact that our model works. It’s the next step.”
In August 2013, Elon Musk unveiled plans for the futuristic “Hyperloop” transportation system, which can transport passengers between San Francisco and Los Angeles in under half an hour.
The Hyperloop train concept is based on the idea of a “vactrain” – a high-speed train that runs in a tube devoid of air.
Having no air in the tube means almost no drag – so a vactrain could potentially travel much faster than current high-speed trains.
Musk said the Hyperloop would cost less than $6 billion, and could transport 7.4 million people each way each year. He said it would take 7-10 years for the project to be completed.
