The Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (Aster) launched in 1999, and has been taking pictures of earth ever since.

Aster – a Japanese instrument – is aboard NASA’s Terra spacecraft, and the space agency recently announced that its images are now free to the public.

“Aster captures high spatial resolution data in 14 bands, from the visible to the thermal infrared wavelengths, and provides stereo viewing capability for digital elevation model creation,” said Nasa.
