Smart people exercise less than dummies
New research shows that people with a low need for cognition (they do not like thinking much) were more physically active.
The physical sacrifice of thinking: Investigating the relationship between thinking and physical activity in everyday life contained the research findings.
Previous research showed that humans possess a number of traits that influence their physical activity level.
“We examined whether the trait of “need for cognition” was associated with daily physical activity levels,” said the researchers.
The findings showed that low-need-for-cognition individuals were more physically active. This difference was most pronounced during the 5-day work week, and lessened during the weekend.
“Ultimately, an important factor that may help more thoughtful individuals combat their lower average activity levels is awareness.”
“Awareness of their tendency to be less active, coupled with an awareness of the cost associated with inactivity, more thoughtful people may then choose to become more active throughout the day.”
