4 new elements added to periodic table

Periodic table

Four new elements have been added to the periodic table after being approved by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry.

The new elements have been given official names following their recognition in December 2015.

Elements 113, 115, 117, and 118 – previously known by their placeholder names ununtrium, ununpentium, ununseptium, and ununoctium – have been named:

  • Nihonium (Nh)
  • Moscovium (Mc)
  • Tennessine (Ts)
  • Oganesson (Og)

The four are superheavy elements, which means they break down into lighter elements quickly, and were synthesized between 2002 and 2010.
