MeerKAT radio telescope launching in April

MeerKAT, a radio telescope that will form part of SKA, is set to go live in April 2018, reported the Sunday Independent.

The installation of the 64 dish MeerKAT facility was completed on 18 October, and 50 of the antennas have already been integrated.

Technical teams are currently pushing to get the entire array functional by 1 April 2018.

The fastest computer in Africa was also installed at the MeerKAT site to process data from the telescope.

The computer is 50% faster than any other computer in South Africa.
