100% failure rate for SA law enforcement Internet data requests
South Africa’s law enforcement agencies had a 0% success rate when it came to data requests sent to Facebook, Google, and Microsoft from January to June 2014.
Facebook recently released its government data requests report for the first half of 2014, which showed that governments around the world made 34,946 requests for data.
This followed Google’s Transparency Report a few weeks ago which showed a 15% increase in requests compared to the second half of last year, and a 150% jump since we first began publishing this data in 2009.
South African data requests
Three of the transparency reports – from Google, Facebook, and Microsoft – included data relating to South Africa.
According to these reports the South African government and local law enforcement agencies filed 11 requests for data – all of which failed.
The following table provides an overview of the South African law enforcement data requests sent to Facebook, Google, and Microsoft from January to June 2014.
