DDoS and web application attacks – stats and trends
Akamai has released its Q3 2016 State of the Internet Security Report, which revealed a significant increase in the size of DDoS attacks through the Mirai botnet.
The report, using data gathered from the Akamai Intelligent Platform, provides an analysis of the current cloud security and threat landscape.
According to the report, the two largest DDoS attacks over Q3 both leveraged the Mirai botnet and were the biggest ever observed by Akamai – 623Gbps and 555Gbps.
These attacks were aimed at the site of cybersecurity writer and blogger Brian Krebs, hosted at www.krebsonsecurity.com.
“These attacks were remarkable not only for their size, but also for the source and nature of the traffic they used,” said Akamai.
“Since June, we had been researching a strain of malware we called Kaiten, which targets home routers and Internet of Things devices.”
“The malware has now been released to the world at large, under the name Mirai, and targets more than 60 default username and password combinations.”
