FBI director James Comey has revealed that the Republican Party was also hacked by Russia, but that the information was not leaked.
He said there was “penetration on the Republican side of the aisle and old Republican National Committee domains”.
“There was evidence of hacking directed at state-level organisations, state-level campaigns, and the RNC, but old domains of the RNC, meaning old emails they weren’t using. None of that was released,” said Comey.
These revelations formed part of an investigation into Russia’s hacking of US targets and the intentions behind these hacks.
In December, the US expanded its sanctions on Russia for cyber-attacks that resulted in the leak of Democratic Party emails during the country’s presidential elections.
The US also expelled 35 Russian diplomats and closed two Russian compounds.
US President-elect Donald Trump said that hacking by foreign powers did not affect the outcome of the election.
Trump also blamed the Democratic National Committee for allowing hackers into its computer systems.
“Gross negligence by the Democratic National Committee allowed hacking to take place. The Republican National Committee had a strong defence,” said Trump.
