Smart lock update leaves users stranded
An incorrect update left hundreds of smart lock users stranded last week, and displayed a potential downside of Internet-connected physical security systems.
Ars Technica reported that around 500 LockState RemoteLock 6i smart locks became inoperable after a faulty software update caused a fatal system error.
The report stated that affected 6i locks received a firmware update developed for 7i locks – essentially leaving them bricked.
The company was bombarded with messages on social media following the error, with users unable to lock or unlock their doors.
“Complicating the matter” was that the RemoteLock 6i is included in an Airbnb partnership called Host Assist, stated the report.
This “left many hosts unable to remotely control their locks”.
