Android malware threat doubled in 6 months
Android users are twice as likely to see malware than they were six months ago, with users having a 30% chance of clicking on a malicious link.
According to mobile security firm Lookout, “This number is likely so high because users on mobile devices often encounter threats targeting PCs–people read e-mail, Facebook messages, text messages, and tweets on their phones just as they do on their PCs.”
Lookout estimates 500,000 people were affected by Android malware in the first half of 2011. Apps infected with malware rose from 80 in January to more than 400 in June according to the report.
Two of the most prevalent applications that harboured threats were DroidDream, an application that drops a Trojan on a mobile device, and GGTracker. The Authors of DroidDream had released over 80 unique apps with different versions of malware designed to take control of a device.
