SA spammers beware
The South African Internet Service Providers’ Association (ISPA) recently revealed that their members are responding ‘faster than ever before’ to complaints about spam and phishing attempts originating from their networks.
This is the finding of the latest series of tests that ISPA has undertaken to ensure that all its members are reacting quickly to abuse reports they receive from other ISPs and the public.
“The results of the most recent test show a dramatic improvement in the responsiveness of ISPA members to complaints sent to their abuse addresses. 50 percent of ISPA members responded within one hour to abuse reports, compared to 37 percent towards the end of 2010,” said ISPA.
“63 percent responded within five hours (48% percent in the previous study) and in total, 71 percent had responded to the test e-mails. The final total was actually a 76 percent response rate (119 of ISPA’s 156 members) because 10 members registered a failed delivery and 27 simply did not respond to the test.”
The organization said that only one percent of members had no registered address compared to 11% the last time compliance testing was done.
ISPA Spam Hall of Shame starting to hurt
In related news, Pinpoint SecureMail – open Source-based e-mail protection software – is now integrated in real-time with the Internet Service Providers’ Association (ISPA) Hall of Shame anti-spam watchlist.
According to Yossi Hasson, managing director of Pinpoint SecureMail development company SYNAQ, this means that all companies – and the domains from which they send unsolicited bulk e-mails – listed on the ISPA spam Hall of Shame are immediately given an extra weighting on SYNAQ’s spam algorithms and are quarantined.
The Hall of Shame report is compiled by ISPA to assist South African companies and consumers to effectively manage local unsolicited bulk email which ISPA defines as spam.
In the first three weeks following the ISPA Hall of Shame integration into Pinpoint SecureMail, SYNAQ identified and blocked 146,926 spam messages sent out by companies included in the list.
