Symantic’s July 2012 Symantic.cloud Intelligence report has revealed the statistics for email spam and other cyber security threats.
Symantic revealed that 1 in every 436.6 emails was considered malicious and carried a virus.
1 in every 1.48 emails were considered spam, which made up 67.8% of all South African email traffic throughout July 2012.
South Africa ranks second, globally, for phishing percentage (1 in every 171.2 emails comprised of a phishing attack); but saw a decrease of 0.003% for July 2012, with 1 in every 475.3 emails containing phishing attacks.
1 in every 340.9 emails contained malware attacks, marking a 0.023% decrease from June to July 2012.
2,189 malicious websites were blocked per day, an increase of 4.0% since June.
The July report accredited the numbers to the use of the Olymics to lure users into phishing attacks through emails and various social networking platforms.
