MWEB targeted in phishing attack
Cyber criminals are targeting Internet Service Provider MWEB in a phishing attack which uses a “mailbox quota allowance” warning to try to unlawfully get usernames and passwords.
The message reads “This message was sent by System security server concerning your mailbox quota allowance on your Webmail account. This recent alert has placed a lock status on your account and needs to be updated by you.”
Users are encouraged to click on a link named “www.mweb.co.za/quota” to “update their account quota”. However, the link is actually directing users to a phishing URL.
The phishing website asks users to enter their email address and password in an online form, and redirects to the MWEB website with the message “Page not found”.
MWEB confirmed that it is a phishing attack, and users are advised to ignore the message and not click on the link in the email.
