Malware alert for Road Traffic Infringement Agency website

Cyber Government online security privacy

Malware is being served on the Road Traffic Infringement Agency (RTIA) website (rtia.co.za), according to a number of freely available online website scanning tools.

According to these tools, the domain has already been blacklisted by Norton Safe Web, McAfee SiteAdvisor, Yandex Safebrowsing, BitDefender, and Scumware.org.

Windows Defender, a security program from Microsoft sometimes bundled with its Windows operating system, is also among the tools that detect the malware, listing it as “Exploit:HTML/IframeRef.DM”.

Microsoft describes the exploit as “a malicious iFrame appended at the end of HTML files. The iFrame may be only one pixel in length to avoid being noticed.”

The malware runs if you visit a website or open an HTML page containing this iFrame, Microsoft said.

A quick look at the website’s code reveals that it contains 3 iFrames that are pulling in content from the “fantasygifts.com” domain.

The RTIA and Road Traffic Management Corporation were not immediately available to comment on the apparent hack of the RTIA website.
