1GB of mobile data is simply not enough

54% of South African smartphone users have access to more than 1GB of data per month on their mobile phones. This is according to Effective Measure’s South African Mobile Report.

The report is based on feedback from a survey which was completed by 4,956 desktop Internet users in South Africa.

The report found that the majority of smartphone users in South Africa are on Vodacom’s network, followed by MTN, Cell C, 8ta (Telkom Mobile), and Virgin Mobile.

What is noteworthy is that more than half (53.3%) of smartphone users are using Vodacom, with MTN a distant second on 29.9%.


Monthly data usage

The report showed that 65.4% of smartphone users are on a contract package, while 34.6% are using pre-paid services. 65.7% of users subscribe to data plans for their phones.

27.3% of smartphone users have Internet bundles of more than 1GB per month, and 26.1% have unlimited data on their phones (typically Blackberry users).
