At 11:11 on Friday, 11 April 2014, the Samsung Galaxy S5 was officially launched in South Africa on various contract and cash-only offers.
While the weakened Rand doesn’t seem to have done the Samsung Galaxy S5’s price any favours, Midrand-based Esquire has a special on until 12 April 2014 with prices more in-line with those from last year.
Two variants of the Samsung Galaxy S5 are available in South Africa: a 16GB model that supports Long Term Evolution (LTE) networks, and a 32GB model without LTE support.
The LTE model is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon chip, while the non-LTE version has one of Samsung’s own Exynos chips in it.
Esquire lists the Galaxy S5 32GB 3G model for R7,799 excluding VAT (R8,891 incl.), and the 16GB LTE version for R8,239 excl. (R9,392 incl. VAT).
These prices are significantly lower than Samsung’s recommended retail price of R10,200.
The next cheapest deal is from Standard Bank for its clients, which offers the 32GB Samsung Galaxy S5 either for an outright purchase of R9,360, or for R390/month for 24 months.
