LG G3 Android 5.0 Lollipop update for South Africa

South Africans with LG G3 smartphones can look forward to receiving an update to Android 5.0 “Lollipop” by the second week of December 2014, a spokesperson for LG Mobile in South Africa has told MyBroadband.

LG made headlines recently when it announced that the new version of Android would roll out on its flagship LG G3 smartphone in Poland this week (9 – 15 November) – before Google’s own Nexus devices receive their update.

Nexus devices have a reputation for being able to download new versions of Android before any other device as they usually get their software updates straight from Google, which develops Android.

The LG G3 is also not the only device to have received an update before Android Lollipop became available for the Nexus 4, 5, 7, and 10.

Motorola has started rolling out test builds of Android 5.0 to “soak testers” on its Moto X smartphone, Ars Technica has reported.

Google officially announced the launch window, version number, and name of the latest iteration of its Android mobile operating system in mid-October.

Previously just referred to as the “L-edition”, the new version of Android has been in preview since the end of June 2014.

With LG Poland announcing that it is rolling out Android 5.0 Lollipop to the LG G3, one can’t help but wonder whether South Africans will also see the update before it rolls out to older Nexus devices.

A spokesperson for LG Mobile in South Africa confirmed that it is currently testing Android Lollipop and is expecting the last update to their software on 12 November 2014. They expect to finalise their software and release it on 21 November.

Once this final build has undergone testing at operators, it will be pushed to LG G3 owners in South Africa, which LG said should be during December.

The launch of the Nexus 6 is also set for 12 November, with the roll-out of Android 5.0 Lollipop updates for older Nexus devices expected to follow shortly thereafter.
