The rise of sub-R750 smartphones in South Africa

The latest GfK research on smartphone retail sales shows strong growth in the sub-R750 category.

According to the GfK figures, sub-R750 smartphones accounted for 31% of all smartphone sales from July 2014 to September 2014 in South Africa. This is up from only 2.6% for October 2013 to December 2013.

The GfK stats reveal that the average cost of a sub-R750 smartphone dropped from R655 at the end of 2013 to R567 during July 2014 to September 2014.

The research also shows that the large majority (over 90%) of sub-R750 smartphones sold in South Africa are Android devices.
