MTN announced on 2 April 2015 it is the first operator in Africa to launch smartphones based on Mozilla’s Firefox OS mobile operating system.
The Alcatel OneTouch Fire E will be the first smartphone powered by Firefox OS and will launch in SA, said MTN.
The launch of the device comes after Mozilla confirmed in November 2014 that MTN would launch Firefox OS devices in the country.
“Having a smartphone based on the Firefox operating system means we can deliver numerous unique product innovations,” said Larry Annetts, chief marketing officer at MTN South Africa.
“For example, the phone can be easily set up for four of the 11 official languages, namely English, Afrikaans, isiZulu and Xhosa. MTN will incorporate other languages in future versions of the phone.”
The Alcatel OneTouch Fire E is available at selected MTN outlets on prepaid and on the MTN MyChoice 25 contract for R89 per month.
