Samsung Galaxy S7 launch date for South Africa

The Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge will be available in South Africa from 11 March 2016, the same day as its global launch, said Samsung South Africa.

The company unveiled the latest iteration of its flagship Android smartphones at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on 21 February.

Initial indications are that the 32GB Galaxy S7 will cost between $650 and $695, while the 32GB Galaxy S7 Edge will cost between $750 and $795. These prices exclude sales taxes.

No pricing for South Africa has been confirmed yet, with Cell C telling MyBroadband that it will announce prices at a later stage.

Vodacom, MTN, and Telkom did not respond to questions by the time of publication.

According to a report by Ars Technica, Samsung said pre-orders for the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge will include a free Gear VR headset.

Next generation of smartphone

Both the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge look similar to their respective predecessors in appearance and hardware, with a few notable differences.

The internal hardware of the two devices received a slight bump: faster processors, 1GB more RAM, and bigger batteries.

The display of the Galaxy S7 is the same size and resolution as the S6, while the screen of S7 Edge is smaller than the Galaxy S6 Edge+ (5.7″), but is larger than the standard Galaxy S6 Edge (5.1″).

The most significant change is the return of the Galaxy’s ingress protection rating, coming in higher than on the Galaxy S5 at IP68.

This means the devices are rated shock, dust, and waterproof. Another change is support for expandable storage through a microSD slot.

The key specifications of the two devices are summarised in the table below.
