WhatsApp can’t access private user data
WhatsApp has assured an Indian high court it is not sharing private user data with Facebook, the India Times reported.
This comes after public interest litigation was introduced against WhatsApp following recent changes to its privacy policy and terms of service.
Speaking for WhatsApp, advocate Siddharth Luthra told the court that WhatsApp does not have access to private user data – including the content of messages, whether text, images, audio, or video.
The instant messaging service uses end-to-end encryption, making it impossible for anyone but the sender and recipients of a message to view the content.
Luthra said the only data WhatsApp shares with Facebook is a user’s name and their phone number.
“We only have access to the person’s name and number which is also obtained by online consent,” he told the court.
“We are abiding by the central government’s regulations for messenger apps. We are not dealing with sensitive information at all.”
