Buy a cellphone contract with GloCell and get a luxury cruise – what went wrong

GloCell recently launched a deal where customers who signed up with the company for any 24-month Cell C contract would be given a free luxury cruise valued at R8,000.
The promotion stated that the cruise package would accommodate two adults and two kids under 18, with trips starting from late November 2016 and running until 1 May 2017.
The “free luxury cruise” included a 3-day/2-night stay on the ship and all non-alcoholic drinks and food.
When it came time for customers to collect their free trip, though, many were told they could not be accommodated.
No room on the ship
Multiple customers took to HelloPeter to share their experience, with several stating they were lied to by GloCell.
They stated the cruise promotion was a hoax and were told all spots were fully booked.
“When applying for the dates to claim your holiday, they reply saying the cruise is fully booked try again next year. At no stage did Glocell or MSC indicate due to availability when offering a package,” said a customer.
“I do believe there are many people out there that have fallen prey to this scam/deal.”
“As we all know, GloCell has scammed consumers into taking out contracts for the cruise deal. There are many consumers just like us who have been tricked. Can someone please open a Facebook page which we could join and file a lawsuit together,” said another customer.
What went wrong
GloCell told MyBroadband that it appears TLC – the managing agents responsible for the booking and supervision of all the cruises – mistakenly told customers via email that cruises for the rest of 2017 had been fully booked.
“The email should have stated that cruises from 1 to 31 January are fully booked,” said GloCell.
“Berths for the rest of 2017 are still available and in fact extensions have also been made available for additional cruises up to the end of 2017.”
“We would like to apologise to those GloCell customers who signed up for the 24-month cellphone contracts with confirmation of a luxury MSC Cruise and who were told by TLC that they can no longer be accommodated on a cruise in 2017.”
It said registered customers who have not been allocated cruise dates and who call the TLC booking office by 30 November 2016 will be accommodated and allocated cruise dates in 2017.
The TLC booking office can be reached on 011 676 7794.
“Once again we do apologise to the registered customers for the inconvenience.”
GloCell has also made a dedicated email address available for customers in the event of further unresolved queries related to the cruise – [email protected].
