New 10nm chips for iPhone 8 – Report

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has started producing chips with a 10nm process for the iPhone 8, DigiTimes reported.

It reported that production issues involving “stacking components in the backend integrated fan-out packaging process” have been solved.

MediaTek and HiSilicon have also ordered the 10nm chips from TSMC, it stated.

Although MediaTek had plans to produce two 10nm series chips, the X30 and P35, plans for the P35 were cancelled due to a lack of interest from major customers.

In addition to orders for 10nm chips, DigiTimes reported that TSMC has received orders for 12nm chips from Nvidia, MediaTek, Silicon Motion Technology, and HiSilicon.

It said Nvidia is having processors fabricated for AI computing and self-driving cars.
