BBM has 2.1 million monthly active users in South Africa, 75% of which are active daily and spend an average of 31 minutes per day on the platform.
This is according to Matthew Talbot, the CEO of Creative Media Works, which owns the licence to operate the BBM platform on non-BlackBerry devices.
South Africa is BBM’s second key market on the continent, with Nigeria boasting 4.2 million monthly active users.
The numbers reported exclude BBM users on devices which run BlackBerry OS, said Talbot.
He added that active users are users who send messages on the platform, and that BBM’s total registered user base in South Africa is around 12 million.
BBM has stated that South Africa is a key growth market for the service, and it sees massive potential in the country.
“South Africa has always been a key market for us and we have a loyal and engaged user base here which we intend to grow significantly over the next few years,” Adam Pattison, VP for EMEA at BBM, told MyBroadband earlier in the year.
