Essential Phone will have new accessories every few months

Essential Phone creator Andy Rubin has laid out his plan for supporting the smartphone over the coming years.

The Essential Phone is set to start shipping to customers soon, and Rubin has promised the following:

  • 2 years of Android software updates.
  • 3 years of security patches.
  • New wireless accessories every few months.

The first accessory Rubin showed off was a 360-degree camera attachment.

“At Essential, we are up against industry giants. There is a significant advantage to that kind of scale, but we also know that when a company gets to a certain size, the desire to create a customer-first experience sometimes takes a back seat,” said Rubin.

Rubin also stated that the Essential Phone will “play well with others” and will not feature closed ecosystems – which are “divisive and outdated”.

The Essential Phone is selling for $700, with buyers able to add the 360-degree attachment for an additional $49.
