Google has unveiled its new Pixel 2 smartphone.
The device sports an edge-to-edge display is available in a 5-inch standard and 6-inch XL model.
The Pixel 2 has an all-aluminium body and features a fingerprint sensor at the back of the phone, below the camera.
There is no 3.5mm headphone jack on the Pixel 2, and users will need to use a USB-C adapter to listen to music.
The 5-inch Pixel 2 has a 1,920 x 1,080 OLED display, while the 6-inch Pixel 2 XL boasts a QHD+ pOLED screen. Both devices feature always-on displays.
Smart features
The Pixel’s display also has a circular polarizer, allowing users to see the screen properly while wearing sunglasses.
The built-in Google Assistant features advanced recognition abilities, and can identify the name and artist of a song using a simple command – and search for it on Google Play Music.
To launch Assistant, users can squeeze the side of the device and deliver a voice command to it.
Using Google Assistant, Pixel 2 users can also broadcast to Google Home devices from their smartphone.
The Pixel 2’s camera also features Google Lens – which can be used to recognise phone numbers, addresses, and art automatically, and will push useful information on the object to the user.
The camera on the Pixel 2 is a 12MP sensor with f/1.8 aperture and optical image stabilisation. It also includes various machine-learning features, allowing it to generate a depth map with a single camera lens.
Pixel 2 owners will continue to get free, unlimited storage using Google Photos.
Google said the Pixel 2 will also support an eSIM – an embedded SIM that lets you instantly connect to a carrier network.
Pricing
The devices will launch with pure Android 8.0 Oreo, and Pixel users will always be the first to receive OS and security updates, said Google.
- The Pixel 2 will be priced from $649.
- The Pixel 2 XL will be priced from $849.
A free Google Home Mini is included with each Pixel 2 purchase in selected regions, said Google.
The devices are currently available for pre-order in the US, Australia, Germany, India, UK, and Canada.
