Huawei Mate 10 Pro – Powerful AI in a smartphone

Huawei has launched its Mate 10 Pro smartphone in South Africa, offering powerful processing ability and unique features.

The device is powered by the manufacturer’s Kirin 970 processor, which boasts improved speed, responsiveness, and efficiency.

A major feature of the Kirin 970 is its embedded Neural Processing Unit (NPU), which allows it to function as an AI computing platform and provide superior performance across various tasks.

The chip is built on a 10nm process node, and comprises an octa-core CPU and 12-core GPU in addition to the NPU.

The NPU in the Kirin 970 delivers 50-times the computational efficiency and 25-times the performance of a quad-core Cortex A73 CPU in AI computing scenarios, said Huawei.

This means the Mate 10 Pro can deliver premium performance while remaining power-efficient.

While most competing devices feature cloud-based AI computing, the Mate 10 Pro’s Kirin 970 operates independently from the cloud.

This ensures user privacy and security, as the AI computing can be performed on the device itself.

The 4,000mAh battery in the device also ensures this processing power is not short-lived for users.

AI-powered photography

Huawei has once again partnered with Leica to provide a cutting-edge dual-camera solution on its smartphone.

The Leica dual lens on the Mate 10 Pro sports a 20MP monochrome sensor and 12MP RGB sensor, with optical image stabilisation.

This design allows for clear low-light photographs and blur-free shots of moving objects. The Leica camera also has an f/1.6 aperture.

Huawei has also paired the camera system with the Mate 10 Pro’s AI abilities.

Through the camera, the Huawei Mate 10 Pro can actively identify object and scene types in real time, automatically adjusting colours, contrast, brightness, and exposure to produce great photos.

The device’s AI platform has also been trained against a database of framed portrait images, and can use this information to provide a professional bokeh effect.

The Mate 10 Pro recognises focal points like faces and automatically adjusts depth of field and other settings to deliver well-framed portraits, said Huawei.
