Samsung to unlock FM chip in smartphones

TagStation has announced that Samsung plans to unlock the FM chip in upcoming smartphones in the US and Canada.

Many smartphones globally are manufactured with hardware capable of receiving FM radio signals.

Samsung is now unlocking the FM chip, which will allow users to listen to local radio stations.

“When cellular coverage is congested or unavailable, the FM chip will provide life-saving information from local radio stations,” said TagStation.

Calls have increased for all phone manufacturers to unlock the FM chip in smartphones as a public safety necessity.

Samsung will join LG, Motorola, and Alcatel in taking the step to provide FM functionality.
