The Huawei P30 Pro’s camera is absolutely insane – Here are the photos we took

Huawei recently launched its P30 and P30 Pro smartphones at an event in Paris.

The new smartphones boast improved specifications, enhanced designs, and unprecedented camera systems.

Huawei has partnered with Leica to deliver a high-performance camera system on a smartphone which rivals that of entry-level DSLR cameras in many respects.

The pinnacle of this camera technology is embedded in the Huawei P30 Pro, comprising four lenses and a software and processing suite which takes the device’s photos to a new level.

It is this camera system which makes the Huawei P30 Pro the highest-ranking smartphone on DxOMark’s mobile camera rankings, with a score of 112.

MyBroadband attended the P30 launch event in Paris and had the opportunity to try out the P30 Pro’s camera.

Camera technology

The Huawei P30 Pro marks the next step in Huawei’s mobile camera evolution, leveraging cutting-edge technology and large image sensors to deliver the best quality possible.

A vertical triple-lens array is placed at the rear of the P30 Pro, next to which is a TOF camera for enhanced focus and stabilisation.

The camera configuration for the Huawei P30 Pro is below.

Lens Details
Rear Camera
40MP Wide Angle, f/1.6 aperture, OIS
20MP Ultra-wide Angle, f/2.2 aperture
8MP Telephoto, f/3.4 aperture, OIS
TOF Huawei Time-of-Flight lens, autofocus
Front Camera
32MP f/2.0 aperture

50x zoom

The standout feature on the camera is a 50x digital super zoom, which takes zoomed photos from distance.

This zoom functionality is enabled by the telephoto lens’s unique periscope design, which offers 10x hybrid zoom and 5x optical zoom.

Both the rear and front camera systems on the Huawei P30 Pro also support HDR photos and the new RYYB sensor installed in the device allows for unprecedented low-light photo quality.

The test

For our camera test, we took photos from the top of the Sacré-Cœur – focusing on the same point from a number of zoom levels.

There was a distant smog over the city which distorted the detail of distant object slightly, but the P30 Pro was able to deliver an impressive picture nonetheless.

We also tested the device’s Night Mode at the Eiffel Tower against the standard and ultra-wide shooting modes.

It is apparent from our tests that the Huawei P30 Pro’s camera is absolutely incredible, delivering unbelievable zoom capabilities and clear night shots.
