Google testing editing feature for Android Messages app
Google has been working to improve its Android Messages app, and the latest feature it is testing is the ability to edit messages once they’ve been sent, SpAndroid reports.
The latest beta version of the app, released in late November 2023, contains code indicating that it will feature some form of message editing feature.
The flags spotted in SpAndroid’s teardown of the app include: “bugle.enable_edit_ui”, “bugle.load_edit_history”, “bugle.process_outgoing_edits”, and “bugle.process_incoming_edits”.
The first flag refers to a message-editing feature in the app’s UI. The second references an ability to pull up an edit history, while the third and fourth appear to deal with processing edits for message senders and recipients.
Google appears to be trying to catch up its Messages app to the likes of WhatsApp and Telegram.
Telegram has offered the ability to edit sent messages for some time now, while Meta Platforms-owned WhatsApp launched a similar feature this year.
According to Android Central, the flurry of new feature releases isn’t surprising as the adoption of Rich Communication Service (RCS) messaging has increased competition in the space.
However, platform compatibility should soon improve, with Apple looking to bring RCS support to iOS in 2024.
