Windows Phone 7.8 update rolling out

The Windows Phone 7.8 update is beginning its rollout to smartphones running on Windows Phone 7.5, Nokia announced in a press release today.

“People can now transform their Nokia Lumia device with a host of exciting new personalisation features including resizable tiles, new lock screen options, increased language support and more theme colours,” the Finnish phone manufacturer said.

Nokia said that, following extensive software testing, update notifications will begin to appear for Nokia Lumia 510, 610, 710, 800 and 900 owners with an unlocked phone or operator-approved software during February 2013.

A message will appear on the phone encouraging users to get the update, and users will need to connect their phone to their computer via Zune for PC, or the Windows Phone app for Mac and follow the onscreen instructions, Nokia said.

Nokia highlighted the following new features that will be included in the update:

  • Internet sharing;
  • Bluetooth sharing;
  • Imaging enhancements like Camera Extras; and
  • The release of apps such as Contact Share, Play To and Nokia City Lens.

Nokia said that Lumia smartphone users can ensure that they don’t miss out on the update, by checking that notifications are enabled on their phone. Go to Settings > Phone Update > “Notify me when new updates are found”.

South African users have reported being able to download the update even though they haven’t received the notification yet.
