Vodacom low cost smartphones planned

Vodacom has “some interesting low cost devices in the pipeline”, which is set to compete against MTN’s Steppa smartphone which costs R499.

Vodacom said that they will leverage their Vodafone global purchasing power to ensure the best devices at competitive rates.

The company would not provide any further details about their planned low-cost smartphones. However, MyBroadband received credible information that a mid-2014 launch date is likely.

MTN launched its Steppa Android smartphone in January 2014. The MTN Steppa smartphone, priced at R499, features a 3.5 inch touch screen display, FM radio and a 2MP camera with video recording.

The MTN Steppa is based on a Qualcomm Reference Design, powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor.
